A good cigar will certainly age in the wrapper, just as a good wine will age in the bottle. Aging cigars, as wine involves very complex chemical processes. Oxidations, slow chemical changes, blending of essential oils are all involved.
Cigars purchased from a local tobacconist’s humidor are more likely to be ready to smoke immediately (or with less aging), as opposed to cigars purchased online or via mail order. Every cigar ages and tastes differently, even cigars in the same box or bundle.
But certain cigars are just naturally better suited for aging. An example is larger ring-gauge cigars. The thicker the cigar, the greater the variety of tobacco leaves and hence, the more complex the final flavor of the aged cigar will be.
Cigar aging is more akin to the practices of wine aging, creating an optimal environment for the continuous evolution a cigar’s tobacco will undergo. Why age cigars? Cigars are made up organic, breathing, continuously changing material – aka tobacco leafs.
Cigars made with tobaccos that already have many years of aging on them will not improve much more with additional aging at home. Cigars that are released with 5 to 10 or even more years of aging are , by design , made to be smoked right out of the box.
Aging premium cigars can be an educational and fun pastime and it can result in some optimally aged smokes. But, before you embark on a plan of collecting and aging, be sure to consider the potential costs as well as the prospective rewards.
